25th Ward Alderwoman candidate Aida Flores—the daughter of a union laborer, wife of a union educator, and a union leader herself—spent Labor Day celebrating the organized workers who keep the city running.

For Aida Flores, Labor Day is deeply personal. She is the daughter of a union construction laborer, she is married to a union educator, and she serves on her own union’s leadership team.

This weekend, she spent the holiday bringing people together, joining the Letter Carriers for their family picnic and marching alongside them in the parade. Spotting the local neighborhood mailman in the parade crowd was a direct reminder of who actually does the work.

Through winter freezes, summer heatwaves, civil unrest, and a global pandemic, our letter carriers kept showing up for the neighborhoods. They are the people doing the tough jobs to keep Chicago moving.

Whether sharing a barbecue at a block party or walking a parade route, the day is about honoring the people who organize and fight for working families. Organized labor is the true fabric of the city.
